I agree in that we all have reasons for not being Out and Proud. Especially in Rural places. No one Should pressure anyone else to come out of the closet. However, With Marriage Rights being Given and Taken Away, with Pray away the Gay in the Mainstream, God Hates Faggots Marches, Lesbian Rapes, Discrimination Running Rampant, Lesbians not Allowed to see each other in hospitals, hatred spewed in streets, and some Lesbians feeling so very alone and violated on a daily basis, WE can save them, we can validate them and we can create a stronger Lesbian Visibility.
We do need to Stand up and to Support Each other. To create safe places even if it is just a YouTube video. We are all so different, different races, income levels, education levels, lifestyles, the More of Us that do reach out there may be someone looking for someone just like us to validate their life, to make them know that the are not alone and that We Get It.
Steph is NOT forcing you to come out. I mean it is a video, it is her opinion, She is not the Lesbian Police going door to door dragging you out of the closet. She is simply saying that more of Us Should be Out Lesbians, I am Sure Steph will understand if some of you REALLY need to stay in the closet.
Some people feel like they are just living there lives and just happen to be gay. Everybody knows and it is no big deal. But when they discuss their “anniversary” or grab their parties hand at an outing they too are given looks and made to feel as an outsider. If Lesbians Young, Old and In between know that We, the Online Lesbian Community are here for them and that there are Millions of Us Worldwide, they may breath a little easier, walk a little taller just knowing that it is Ok to be an Out Lesbian.
Being Out and In Your Face about it is not really what she is saying, in my opinion. I feel that Step is simply saying if we hide in the Shadows while others are being beaten, raped, discriminated against and held down then we are part of the problem, this is true.
There are, of course, circumstance where your life,
your quality of life or the custody of your children are at stake. This is understandable, however, those of us who can stand up here and there, make it easier for those folk in the future. Steph is Not saying Come Out even if Your going to get thrown out, be homeless or lose your kids. She is Boldly saying, Let's stand up and protect each other, be visible and give voice to those who can't stand up as well as to let Everyone know that there are a whole lot more of us Lesbians then folks may realize...
